Problems While Updating Firmware Or Language Pack

In electronic / computing terms, "Firmware" refers to a small program or data structure that internally control various electronic devices. FingerTec terminals employ firmwares to operate its basic as well as high-level functions. By updating the firmware, we can fix bugs or add features to the device. This process involves loading a binary image file into the terminal. If the terminal’s firmware is outdated or corrupted, the FingerTec terminal will cease to work correctly and will result in slow response or even freeze. It is recommended to update the terminal’s firmware before performing any troubleshooting to the terminal.

There are a few issues to take note of while updating the firmware or language pack into the terminal:

  1. Make sure that the computer is installed with the TCMSv2 software. Without the TCMS V2 software, the firmware or language pack tool will not launch correctly. You can download the latest version of TCMSv2 software here.
  2. Disable the firewall or anti-virus software. Some of the firewall or anti-virus software will block the communication from the firmware or language pack tool to the terminal. You will need to disable the firewall or anti-virus software and update the firmware or language pack. Upon successfully updating the firmware or language pack, you may enable the firewall or anti-virus software.
  3. Disable the WiFi connection. Currently the firmware or language pack can only be updated using the LAN cable. If you update the firmware or language pack using the WiFi connection, the firmware in the terminal will be faulty or sometimes corrupted.
  4. Make sure you update the correct firmware to the respective terminals. We a few terminals with different core boards within a same model. Please refer to the list below:

  • Q2i & TA200 Plus (FEM500)
  • Q2i & TA200 Plus (FEM510)
  • Q2i (FEM600)
  • TA200 Plus (FEM600)
  • i-Kiosk 100 (FEM500)
  • i-Kiosk 100 (FEM510)
  • i-Kiosk 100 (FEM600)
  • i-Kiosk 100 Plus (FEM500)
  • i-Kiosk 100 Plus (FEM600)
  • Face ID 2 (FEM600)
  • Faec ID 2 (FEM800)
  • R2 (FEM500)
  • R2 (FEM565)

You will need to determine your terminal’s platform before updating the firmware. To check the terminal’s platform, you may download the FingerTec Device Info Tool here. Extract the Device Info Tool and insert the terminal’s IP Address and click Connect.

The Device Info Tool will display the terminal’s details as per the screenshot below:

Please download the firmware according to the Platform type. To download the firmware: http://tips.fingertec.com/tips-download-firmware.php

The black & white screen models such as TA100, R2, Kadex and etc have a limited storage space. The terminal can only store up to 2 languages. Please download the transaction logs before updating the language pack to free up more storage space. If your terminal already has 2 languages installed, you will need to delete the existing language before updating a new one. To delete the language, download the language removal tool here. Extract the file and follow the instruction manual to remove the language.

FingerTec Firmware Update

New firmware to apply to Kadex, m-Kadex, R2, AC900, Q2i, TA200 Plus, i-Kiosk 100 & i-Kiosk 100 Plus to work with AdapTec Plus
Update the new firmware of the above models to support the “encrypted 26-bit Wiegand output”. The encrypted 26-bit Wiegand output is specially developed to work with FingerTec’s AdapTec Plus. After each verification, the output for the models above encrypts codes via the 26-bit Weigand signal to the AdapTec Plus to send a door open signal for the users.
Without this new firmware, you will not be able to use the above models with the AdapTec Plus for access control purposes.

New features for TA100C and AC100C Webster connection
Update the new firmware of the TA100C and AC100C, to allow the terminals to work with Webster. This is a fundamental firmware update to add the Webster connection to the mentioned models. However you will still have to contact support@fingertec.com to request a second firmware update to activate Webster settings in your terminal.

New features for m-Kadex
Update the new firmware of the m-Kadex to get these 3 new features:
-          To delete attendance logs in m-Kadex
-          To download/upload data into USB flash disk

Before this, an administrator can only choose to reset and clear all information in the m-Kadex. Installing the firmware in the m-Kadex, will allow you to clear attendance logs only. Now, administrators can easily clear the attendance logs in the m-Kadex to avoid a memory overflow.
To delete attendance logs in the m-Kadex: wave administrator card 7 times at m-Kadex

Previously, administrators can only use the USB flash disk to download attendance logs and not users. After installing the new firmware, administrator will be able to download attendance logs as well as user data into USB flash disk.
To download attendance logs and user data into a USB flash disk: Plug USB flash disk into m-Kadex à wave administrator card 9 times at m-Kadex

The previous firmware in the m-Kadex does not allow an administrator to upload user data into the m-Kadex via USB flash disk. An administrator can only upload user data to the m-Kadex via the TCMS V2. The new firmware fixes this flaw, and allows administrators to upload user data into m-Kadex via a USB flash disk.
To upload user data to m-Kadex via USB flash disk: download user data into USB flash disk à Plug USB flash disk to m-Kadex à wave administrator card 11 times

Download or view the latest m-Kadex hardware user manual guide here.

The FMM 100 Core board : Now with New Firmware!

FingerTec will be releasing its new core board FMM 100, which carries 800 MHz microprocessor and 128 MB of RAM, together with 256 MB flash memory. The improved hardware allows our R&D to build a new firmware which carries a lot more useful features.

However, the new core board and new firmware links up with our software perfectly and allow users transfer from all old devices. Thus, the new hardware and firmware can still work in the same ecosystem perfectly.

Apart from retaining the existing features of our firmware, we will also be adding more powerful features to enhance the firmware’s accessibility. Here are some of the features:

1. The quality of graphics for the main screen during standby has been enhanced.

2. The new design icons when you access into operation menu.

3. The User Role feature allows you to create a secondary administrator. You can control his/her access to specific modules and features in the device. There are total 3 different user roles that you can configure. You can assign specific roles to him/her as secondary administrator.

4. The new firmware allows you to backup or restore its data (user information, setup parameters and transaction logs) into its internal memory or USB flash disk. You no longer need to worry about the data stored in the device if you wish to reset and everything back to default settings.

5. The attendance data downloads into USB flash disk is encrypted to avoid users to amend the data. You can only load the data into TCMS v2 or Ingress software to process attendance. However in the new firmware, you can set the device not to apply any encryption to the attendance data download into USB flash disk. You can use the attendance data with your own software to process calculation. Please take note, you must apply the encryption if you want to use attendance data in USB flash disk with TCMS v2 and Ingress software.

You can now configure the settings so device can delete the old attendance data after the download into USB process. You do not need to clear the storage everytime after download into USB flash disk.

However the terminal cannot be immediately used with Webster or TimeTec. Users will need to register with FingerTec and we will provide you with a firmware to update the terminal upon registration. For steps on how to obtain the TimeTec firmware, please refer to the FingerTec Technical Newsletter (http://www.fingertectips.com/2011/11/fingertec-timetec-trial-version.html) for more information.

Model Involved: TA100, TA103R, Timeline 100, TA100C, AC100, AC100C, I-Kiosk 100 (FEM 600), I-Kiosk 100 Plus (FEM 600), Q2i & TA200 Plus (FEM 600), M2 and R2

2. Different USB data output for both Black & White Screen Model and Multimedia Model.
We have recently released a new fingerprint algorithm, BioBridge VX10.0. (http://www.fingertec.com/newsletter/Aug2011/FN-01.html) As you may already know, the new algorithm speeds up the fingerprint verification process of the terminal and it maximizes the fingerprint templates capacity to 10,000 for any multimedia model with FEM 600 core board only.

With the new firmware, you may transfer the fingerprint templates using the USB pen drive directly into another terminal. To transfer the fingerprint templates using the USB pen drive, go to the Pen Drive Management at the terminal, insert the pen drive and select Download User. After the download is completed, remove the pen drive and insert to the other intended terminal. Go to the Pen Drive Management and select Upload User.

The FingerTec black and white display terminals only supports fingerprint BioBridge VX 9.0 algorithm. You can transfer fingerprints using the USB pen drive among the black and white display terminals but not to the multimedia terminals, which runs on the BioBridge VX 10.0 algorithm. To upload BioBridge VX9.0 algorithm fingerprint templates to a multimedia terminal, you will have to configure the multimedia terminal into BioBridge VX 9.0 algorithm before you can proceed with the transfer. In event that you would like to enroll the fingerprint using a multimedia terminal and later transfer the fingerprint template to a black and white display terminal, you will need to configure the multimedia terminal into BioBridge VX 9.0 before you start to enroll the fingerprint.

Please take note that the BioBridge VX10.0 algorithm cannot be mixed and matched with fingerprint templates from BioBridgeVX9.0 algorithm. The templates derived from the BioBridge VX9.0 will prompt an error during the verification period if it were uploaded to the terminal via the BioBridge VX10.0 or vice versa.

3. Customized External Siren’s Minimum Ring Period To 30 Seconds.
The FingerTec TA100C and TA200 Plus model comes with an external siren or a scheduled bell feature. Configuration of time settings can be done in terminal prior to connecting it to any bell system with an independent power supply. Once the time is configured, the terminal would trigger the bells at the specific times.
From the previous firmware, we know that external siren’s minimum ring period is 15 seconds. With the new firmware, we change the external siren’s minimum ring period to 3 seconds.
To set configure the external siren’s ring period setting, please press Menu > System > Misc Set > Bell.

Kadex & R2(FEM565) Latest Firmware And Feature Explained

FingerTec has updated Kadex and R2(FEM 565) firmware from the previous version 3544-05 to the latest version 5114-07 which now includes the new feature to support 99 Access Groups.

Feature Description
Previously, the maximum Access Group that is allowed for 3544-05 firmware is limited to 5 access groups. Hence to further benefit users, the updated firmware now allows the users to include up to 99 access groups. This improvement is perfectly suitable for big companies that have a huge number of employees as well as intend to restrict their employees’ access into certain areas within certain time zones.

Example:
During Weekdays, Door A in a company can be accessed by User A within 12.00 am to 09.00 am and User B within 09.00 am to 6.00 pm. In this case, Admins can create 2 different access groups with 2 different Access Level settings as shown below:

Access Group 1: Door A, Night (12.00 am to 09.00 am), User A
Access Group 2: Door B, Morning (09.00 am to 6.00 pm), User B

Feature Settings
Configuration of Access Group can be done in Ingress software, at Access Level module. You can download the latest Ingress software from the link provided below:

To configure the settings under Access Level, please first ensure that the terminal is connected with Ingress and added as a device to the door.
Next, add Time Set. When Time Set is added, 3 Time Zones will be created. In Time Set 1, first interval represents Time Zone 1, second interval represents Time Zone 2 and third interval represents Time Zone 3. The same goes for other Time Set when it is created.

Edit the Access Time in the Time Zone accordingly.
Add Access Group under Access Level.

After creating a new Access Group, select the Time Zone with the appropriate timing. Users can also be added into the Access Group under the User tab.

Remarks: 1 User can ONLY be added into 1 Access Group.
